Mölnlycke Health Care has added a new size to its Epaderm emollient range.
A 1kg pot of Epaderm will be available on Drug Tariff from 1 August 2008. Epaderm is listed in Part IXA of the Drug Tariff, under ‘Emollients’. The 125g and 500g pots will also remain available. The new 1kg size has been introduced for patients who require continual emollient therapy and therefore repeat prescriptions.
Epaderm is a 3-in-1 emollient, bath additive and skin cleanser for eczema, psoriasis and other dry skin conditions. Developed by dermatologists, Epaderm contains yellow soft paraffin, emulsifying wax and liquid paraffin, which deeply moisturises and softens the skin. It contains no fragrances, colourings, additives or preservatives.
Skin disorders are amongst the most common diseases encountered by health professionals. There is a large variation in prevalence, with around 10% of the population suffering with atopic eczema and 2% with psoriasis. Skin diseases affect all ages.
The NICE guidelines state emollients are first-line treatment for atopic eczema and other dry skin conditions, and that greasier emollients, such as Epaderm, are more effective.
The Primary Care Dermatology Society (PCDS) and the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) state that emollients should be applied as liberally and frequently as possible. PCDS and BAD guidelines recommend that for application to the whole body, children under ten require 250g of an emollient each week and children over ten, and adults, usually require 600g per week.
Mölnlycke Health Care has introduced the 1kg pot of Epaderm, in line with the clinical guidelines, to encourage appropriate usage. Complying with the guidelines, a child under ten years old, requiring full body application, would use a 1kg pot of Epaderm per month, while this size would last an adult nearly two weeks. The larger size pot reduces patient visits for repeat prescriptions. Epaderm 1kg is suitable, and more economical, for health care professionals to use when treating and managing patients with chronic, on-going dry skin conditions.
