Mepilex® Celebrates 10 Successful Years and a new bigger size!

In 1999, Mölnlycke Health Care launched Mepilex with Safetac® Technology, which started a whole new era of improved dressing changes for patients. Now, ten years later, there is a whole family of Mepilex dressings, which are supported by documented, peer reviewed case studies confirming their effectiveness in minimising pain and trauma during dressing changes.

Mepilex is a multipurpose, highly absorbent polyurethane foam pad with a moisture/vapour permeable film backing and a unique Safetac soft silicone wound contact layer. Mepilex absorbs effectively, whilst maintaining a moist environment for optimal wound healing. Mepilex minimises trauma to the wound and surrounding skin and pain to the patient during dressing changes. It also minimises the risk of maceration and is soft and comfortable. Mepilex can be cut to suit various wound shapes and locations. Other Mepilex dressings include Mepilex Transfer, Mepilex Lite, Mepilex Heel and Mepilex Ag, which was launched at the end of 2007. The latest addition to the family is a new larger sized Mepilex dressing, which has recently been launched. A new 20cm x 50cm dressing is now available, giving health care professionals even more options.

In the last ten years, millions of people have learned that a dressing change doesn’t have to hurt. A global survey undertaken by Mölnlycke Health Care, with over 3000 patients, confirmed that patients prefer dressings from the Mepilex range1. 93% of participating patients said they preferred Mepilex wound care dressings with Safetac Technology, because they hurt less at dressing removal. The survey population displayed a variety of common wound types, including pressure ulcers, skin tears, venous leg ulcers, arterial leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers and burns. The aim of the survey was to measure the impact of introducing advanced dressings with Safetac Technology on levels of wound trauma and pain, compared to a previous regimen of dressings with traditional adhesive based dressings*. There have been many peer reviewed publications over the last ten years involving Safetac Technology including, 10 randomised trials, 9 clinical trials, 3 surveys, 5 volunteer studies, 24 reviews, 31 case studies and 5 laboratory studies.
