Wound Academy Scholarships Awarded

The annual Wound Academy Scholarship Awards this year took place at The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Around 30 guests joined us for lunch and presentation of the awards, which show our commitment to wound care education. Our special guest, David Foster, Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at the Department of Health, presented winners with their prizes.  Following the lunch and presentation, guests had the opportunity to join a tour of the Opera House.

This year’s winner in the Novice Practitioner category was Gilly Glendewar, Tissue Viability Nurse at Le Bas Centre in Jersey. Gilly was awarded the Scholarship for her commitment to improving wound care on Jersey.  She has created a structured educational programme for community nurses and aims to improve wound care for patients and wound care training for health care professionals.

The Princess Royal Radiotherapy Review Team won the Scholarship Team Award for the introduction of a toolkit, which enables health care professionals to effectively assess and manage radiotherapy skin reaction treatments. The toolkit not only offers savings from a time and resource point of view, but also prevents the use of inappropriate dressings and improves care for the patient.

The Dudley Diabetes Foot Team from Russells Hall Hospital in Dudley was awarded a Highly Commended Team Award for its ‘Putting Feet First’ initiative, which provides foot education for patients and health care professionals.  The team, comprising three podiatrists, has focused on the care of wounds in the diabetic foot across primary and secondary care.

Those who scooped an award were delighted with the accolade and everyone who attended said they enjoyed the day immensely.
