BARRIER® Surgical Mask Extra Protection

Surgical masks: When extra protection is needed

The BARRIER® Surgical Mask Extra Protection assortment offers a selection of surgical masks that include a fourth layer that increases protection for the staff against potentially contaminated fluid splashes, and is therefore proposed for use during wet surgery. All surgical masks in this assortment exceed the minimum requirements of the European Standard EN 146832.

Low breathing resistance makes it easier to breathe and is more comfortable over long periods

High level of bacterial filtration efficiency reduces the spread of bacteria to the air in the operating room

Splash-resistant surgical masks reduce the risk for the wearer of being exposed to contaminated fluids

Clear evidence for use of mask in operating room

Bacterial shedding, wound contamination and clinical infection rates in clean wounds are influenced by staff clothing in the operating room. This was shown in a study performed in the UK, with the aim of clarifying the relative contribution of headwear, masks and clothing to the control of wound contamination in both ultraclean and conventional airflow operating rooms. The study concludes that headwear, masks and clothing with elastic cuffs should be worn by all staff in ultraclean-air operating rooms1.
