Double gloving with and without an indicator system compared to single gloving to identify glove breaches

Over the last 30 years, there have been increasing reports on the perforation rate of surgical gloves for operating room personnel                   . The rate to which these breaches go unnoticed has been reported to be as high as 90% . In 1993 the Puncture Indicator^® technology - a double gloving system composed of a specially designed colored underglove combined with a light coloured overglove – was introduced. These indicator system gloves are specifically designed to alert the wearer when the aseptic barrier of the outer glove is breached. Surprisingly, despite its introduction over 30 years ago, adoption of this technology appears to be isolated to specific geographic regions.
