A Systematic review of glove damage during surgery and recommendation for change frequency
Surgical staff have studied the potential link between glove damage, the loss of aseptic barrier and the risk of surgical site infections since the early 1950s
Maintaining surgical asepsis is critical. Compromised glove integrity is one of many different things that can have an impact on surgical asepsis. Due to the risk of glove perforations and glove damage going unnoticed, different surgical specialties are now making recommendations for glove change during surgical procedures, to ensure maintained aseptic barrier throughout the procedure.

In this pod episode Mr Nathan Coombs discusses the comprehensive literature review the group took on examining the available evidence for when surgical glove damage occurs. The Consensus group is hoping this evidence will inform surgical practitioners about the frequency at which they should consider to change their surgical gloves.
